KAMPALA, UGANDA — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has announced the successful dispatch of Uganda’s first shipment of whole powdered milk to Algeria, marking a major milestone in the country’s growing export agenda and deepening of bilateral trade relations.
This development follows President Museveni’s official visit to Algeria in March 2023, during which he held fruitful discussions with His Excellency President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The leaders explored opportunities for economic cooperation, with Algeria expressing strong interest in importing dairy products from Uganda.
“I am happy to see the first shipment of whole powdered milk, starting with an initial batch of 500 tonnes,” President Museveni stated. “This is the beginning of a mutually beneficial trade partnership that will support our farmers and expand Uganda’s footprint in North African markets.”
The export of dairy products, particularly powdered milk, represents a strategic move by Uganda to diversify its agricultural exports and add value to local production. The deal is expected to boost income for Ugandan dairy farmers and processors while strengthening diplomatic ties between the two nations.
President Museveni praised the Ministries of Trade, Agriculture, and Foreign Affairs for their coordinated efforts in making the export deal a reality. He also encouraged more Ugandan producers to tap into international markets by improving quality and meeting global standards.
The first batch of 500 tonnes of powdered milk will pave the way for larger volumes in the future, with potential for Uganda to become a key dairy supplier to Algeria and other countries in the region.
