President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has issued a strong warning against individuals attempting to pollute the National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries, vowing to defend the legacy of Uganda’s liberation heroes.
In a message addressed to NRM members, Ugandans at large, and particularly the Bazzukulu (grandchildren), the President condemned what he described as “self-seekers” who, through fraudulent means, seek to distort the will of the people during party primaries.
“These are people who do not care about the reputation and the glorious heritage of the NRM/NRA/FRONASA – a heritage of martyrs and heroes who faced enemy machine-guns, not for power, but for liberation,” the President stated.
Eight individuals have already been arrested in connection with vote tampering during the tallying process. The arrests span multiple districts including Mayuge, Buyende, Kapchorwa, Pader, Oyam, Rwampara, Kareenga, and Mbarara.
“State agencies have started the necessary anti-crime actions,” Museveni assured, adding that more suspects involved in violence, bribery, and register manipulation are being pursued. He encouraged the public to submit evidence against offenders.
To further support justice and transparency, the President revealed the formation of a legal committee made up of “powerful lawyers” tasked with handling petitions and safeguarding the integrity of the primaries.
“We shall clean up the NRM as we also defend the wider interests of all Ugandans,” he said.
The President’s firm response comes amid growing public concern over irregularities in internal party elections, with many calling for decisive action to protect the values upon which the NRM was founded.
