LIRA CITY — Lira District Woman Member of Parliament Linda Agnes Auma on Thursday petitioned the Office of the State Minister for Economic Monitoring in the Office of the President, accusing the Lira Resident District Commissioner's (RDC) office of swindling Shs3 million meant for three victims of a road accident.
The accident occurred on January 8, 2026, when a vehicle carrying voters from Agweng Sub County overturned, leaving 37 people injured and admitted to Lira Regional Referral Hospital, and one person dead.
Auma said that after consultations with Denis Hamson Obua, the NRM Vice Chairperson for Northern Uganda, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni sent Shs5 million for the deceased's family and Shs37 million for the injured, with each victim entitled to Shs1 million.
However, Auma said three people did not receive the money: Evaline Anam from Aringoomele in Abala Parish, Agweng Sub County; Peter Nam from Anyomene, Acelela Parish, Agweng Sub County; and Jaspher Okullo.
Nam Peter said he tried to talk to the RDC but did not get the money. He said he has already sold five goats because he broke his ribs and a doctor told him not to dig.
Okullo Jaspher said he was rushed to hospital with critical head injuries and, to his dismay, the RDC office did not give him the money.
Anam Evaline also said that when she went to the RDC office, she was told to go to the deputy, Beatrice Abang Molly Kia, who later told her she had already given the money to other people and that she would have to wait while she contacted somebody from Otuke — but up to now there is no money.
Abang Beatrice, the Deputy RDC for Lira District, said the Shs3 million was given to four people. She said she gave one person Shs1.2 million and three others received Shs600,000 each, making Shs3 million.
By Friday, the three had recorded statements with the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.
