Kwania Tragedy: Man Kills Father Amid Infidelity Accusations

Kwania, Uganda — July 9, 2025

Police in Kwania District have launched a murder investigation following a tragic domestic violence incident that claimed the life of a 45-year-old father on the night of July 7, 2025.

According to a statement issued by the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the deceased has been identified as Opio Robert, a businessman from Awei village, Goi Parish, Atongtidi Subcounty.

The suspect, Obonyo Ronald, 20, reportedly returned home from a fishing expedition and accused his wife, Auma Oliver, of infidelity. A violent altercation ensued, prompting his father to intervene. Tragically, the confrontation escalated when the suspect allegedly turned on his father, assaulting him with sticks.

Opio Robert lost consciousness and was being rushed to Aduku Health Centre IV when he succumbed to his injuries.

The suspect fled the scene but was later found and rescued by police officers to prevent possible mob justice. He is currently in custody as investigations continue.

A case of murder has been registered at Atongtidi Police Post and transferred to Kwania Central Police Station. A team of investigators led by D/AIP Iggama William visited the crime scene, though their initial efforts were hampered by heightened community emotions.

The body of the deceased has been taken to Apac General Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem to determine the exact cause of death.

Authorities have since pledged to maintain law and order in the affected area, urging residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

“This tragic incident underscores the devastating impact of unresolved domestic conflicts, toxic masculinity, and poor conflict resolution in our communities,” said SP Okema. “We condemn all forms of domestic violence in the strongest terms.”

The suspect is expected to face charges of murder under sections 171 and 172 of the Penal Code Act.

Police are working with local leaders to defuse tensions and ensure that justice is served.

SP Okema further urged the public to report domestic disputes early and use peaceful, lawful means to resolve conflicts.
